The Secchi disc provides a physical measurement of water clarity by observation of the disc at the maximum visual depth in the water column. Secchi transparency is an indicator of algal population density and turbidity, and can be utilized to classify the trophic status of the lake. Secchi disc depths greater than three meters (10 feet) are generally desirable in lakes.
