Directions

Wasserman Lake is located in the city of Victoria.  Public lake access is available on the western side of the lake off of Church Lake Blvd (County Hwy 43).  From Victoria take County Road 11 south to Hwy 43.  Head west until the road curves south where the access point is located approximately a quarter mile past the curve to the east off a small dirt road.

Site Information

Wasserman Lake is a dimictic class 2B lake protected for aquatic life and recreation.  Water Quality monitoring began in 1997.  It is currently listed as an impaired water body by the MPCA for mercury levels in fish tissues as well as for excess nutrients leading to eutrophication and biological impairment.  MCWD staff have been monitoring the lake on a bi-weekly basis from the time of ice out (April) to the time of fall mixing (mid-October) since 2006.

2008 Water Quality Monitoring

Monitoring season started in early May and ended in late October. A YSI multi-probe sonde was used to measure dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature (oC), pH, and specific conductivity (µS/cm) at each meter depth from the water surface to the bottom.  Water samples were collected at one meter below the water surface and one meter from the bottom.  Surface sample parameters analyzed included total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP).  Surface concentrations of chlorophyll-a were also analyzed and measurements of Secchi disc depth were recorded.  Bottom samples were analyzed for TP and SRP.

2008 Data Summary

2008 Summer Water Quality Summary
Parameters Range Mean TSI Value Lake Grade
Months   June - Sept.   May - Sept.
Secchi Depth (m) 0.5 - 4.1 1.2 57 C
Surface TP (µg/L) 42 - 78 63.2 64 C
Chlorophyll-a (µg/L) 3 - 107 59.7 71 D
    Overall Score 64 C-

The following summary refers to Figure 7.19 (a-d).

  • Secchi disk depth was below the standard limit for most of the season. From late May to early June, secchi disk depth increased from 1.4 to 4.1 m. By late June, secchi disk depth decreased below 1.2 m.
  • Chlorophyll-a concentrations decreased from 49 µg/L to 3 µg/L by early June, which was the only time throughout the season concentrations were below the standard (< 15 µg/L). The highest chlorophyll-a concentration occurred in the middle of July at 107 µg/L, while the remainder of the season, concentrations fluctuated between 27 µg/L to 79 µg/L.
  • Surface TP concentrations were above the standard (< 40 µg/L) for the entire season with the highest concentration (130 µg/L) found in early October. Surface SRP concentrations remained below detection limits except in early June, late September and October.  SRP concentrations ranged at the end of the season from 16 µg/L to 29 µg/L.
  • Bottom TP and SRP concentrations gradually increased until early October.  Both phosphorus concentrations peaked in late September (TP: 1570 µg/L; SRP: 571 µg/L) then declined throughout the end of the season.
