Directions

Smithtown Bay is located near the city of Victoria.  Head east on Minnetonka Blvd, and turn right on Co Rd 101 S. Turn right MN-7 and turn right at Hwy 44. Next turn right at Lake Minnetonka Regional Park and follow the path towards the public boat access.

Site Information

Smithtown Bay is on Lake Minnetonka which is a class 2B lake protected for aquatic life and recreation. Water quality information is available beginning in 1997. MCWD staff have been monitoring the site on Smithtown Bay on a bi-weekly basis from the time of ice out (April) to the time of fall mixing (mid-October) since 2006.

2008 Water Quality Monitoring

Monitoring season started in late April and ended in late October.  A YSI multi-probe sonde was used to measure dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature (oC), pH, and specific conductivity (µS/cm) at each meter depth from the water surface to the bottom.  Water samples were collected at one meter below the water surface and one meter from the bottom. Surface and bottom sample parameters analyzed included total phosphorus (TP), total dissolved phosphorus (TDP), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), total nitrogen (TN), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), nitrate/nitrite (NO3/NO2) and ammonia (NH4).  Surface concentrations of chlorophyll-a were also analyzed and measurements of Secchi disc depth were recorded.  An additional TP sample was taken one meter below the thermocline mixing zone once stratification developed.

2008 Data Summary

2008 Summer Water Quality Summary
Parameters Range Mean TSI Value Lake Grade
Months   June - Sept.   May - Sept.
Secchi Depth (m) 2.1 - 5.0 3.2 43 A
Surface TP (µg/L) 13 - 26 17.8 46 A
Chlorophyll-a (µg/L) 4 - 12 7.3 50 A
    Overall Score 46 A

The following summary refers to Figure 3.43 (a-d).

  • Secchi disk depth fluctuated between 2.6 m and 5 m from late April to late June. The remainder of the season, secchi disk depth decreased but fluctuated between 2 m and 3.8 m (standard > 1.2 m).
  • Chlorophyll-a concentrations peaked three times over the season: late May (12 µg/L), late July (7 µg/L) and then early September (12 µg/L). Throughout the season, chlorophyll-a concentrations did not exceed the standard limit (< 15 µg/L).
  • Surface TP concentrations peaked three times: late April (26 µg/L), early June (26 µg/L) and late September (25 µg/L) all below the standard limit (< 40 µg/L). Surface SRP concentrations were below detection limit (< 0.005 µg/L) except between late April and early May.
  • Bottom TP concentrations ranged between 24 µg/L and 59 µg/L from late April to late July, then concentrations increased to 271 µg/L in early August. TP concentrations were less than 100 µg/L for the rest of the season except from the middle to the end of September. In general, bottom SRP concentrations increased over the season with the maximum concentration occurring in late September at 92 µg/L.
