Directions

Schutz Lake is located in the city of Victoria.  There is no maintained public access for Schutz Lake.  The lake is located south of State Hwy 7 off Rolling Acres Rd. (County Hwy 13).

Site Information

Schutz Lake is a dimictic class 2B lake protected for aquatic life and recreation.  Water Quality Monitoring began in 2002 through the Metropolitan Council’s CAMP program.  MCWD staff have been monitoring the lake on a bi-weekly basis from the time of ice out (April) to the time of fall mixing (mid-October) since 2006.

Historical Information

Currently not available.

2008 Water Quality Monitoring

Monitoring season started in early May and ended in late October. A YSI multi-probe sonde was used to measure dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature (oC), pH, and specific conductivity (µS/cm) at each meter depth from the water surface to the bottom.  Water samples were collected at one meter below the water surface and one meter from the bottom. Additional samples were taken one meter below the thermocline mixing zone once stratification developed.  Surface sample parameters analyzed included total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP).  Surface concentrations of chlorophyll-a were also analyzed and measurements of Secchi disc depth were recorded.  Thermocline and bottom samples were analyzed for TP and SRP.

2008 Data Summary

2008 Summer Water Quality Summary
Parameters Range Mean TSI Value Lake Grade
Months   June - Sept.   May - Sept.
Secchi Depth (m) 1.4 - 3.8 2.1 49 C
Surface TP (µg/L) 22 - 48 32.1 54 C
Chlorophyll-a (µg/L) 9 - 38 16.8 58 C
    Overall Score 54 C

The following summary refers to Figure 6.3 (a-d).

  • Secchi disk depth was above the standard limit (1.2 m) for the majority of the season except in early May. Secchi disk depth ranged from 1.4 m to 3.8 m from June to October. Depth of water clarity increased three times with the greatest secchi depth of the season occurring in early June (3.8 m).
  • Chlorophyll-a concentrations were the highest in early May at 154 µg/L surpassing the standard limit (< 15 µg/L). Concentrations remained below the 20 µg/L for most of the season except in the  middle of June and late October when chlorophyll-a concentrations were greater than 20 µg/L.
  • Surface TP concentrations were 216 µg/L in early May surpassing the standard limit. Concentrations for the remainder of the season were below 70 µg/L. Surface SRP concentrations for majority of the season were less than 10 µg/L. In late September, SRP concentrations increased to 709 µg/L* and by October, concentrations were less than 12 µg/L. *Surface and bottom SRP samples may have been miss labeled.
  • Both bottom TP and SRP concentrations gradually increased throughout the entire season. In late September, SRP concentrations decreased 0 µg/L* and by October, concentrations increased to 816 µg/L. *See above.
