Directions

Peavey Lake is located near the cities of Long Lake and Wayzata.  Head east on Minnetonka Blvd, and turn left on Co Rd 101 S. Turn right at Grays Bay Blvd and enter the Grays Bay Marina and public access on the left side of the road.

Site Information

Peavey Lake is on Lake Minnetonka which is a class 2B lake protected for aquatic life and recreation. Water quality information is available beginning in 1974. MCWD staff have been monitoring the site on Peavey Lake on a bi-weekly basis from the time of ice out (April) to the time of fall mixing (mid-October) since 2006.

Historical Information

2008 Water Quality Monitoring

Monitoring season started in late April and ended in late October.  A YSI multi-probe sonde was used to measure dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature (oC), pH, and specific conductivity (µS/cm) at each meter depth from the water surface to the bottom.  Water samples were collected at one meter below the water surface and one meter from the bottom. Surface and bottom sample parameters analyzed included total phosphorus (TP), total dissolved phosphorus (TDP), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), total nitrogen (TN), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), nitrate/nitrite (NO3/NO2) and ammonia (NH4).  Surface concentrations of chlorophyll-a were also analyzed and measurements of Secchi disc depth were recorded.

2008 Data Summary

2008 Summer Water Quality Summary
Parameters Range Mean TSI Value Lake Grade
Months   June - Sept.   May - Sept.
Secchi Depth (m) 1.5 - 3.0 2.3 48 C
Surface TP (µg/L) 32 - 71 41.7 58 C
Chlorophyll-a (µg/L) 1 - 51 16.3 58 B
    Overall Score 55 C+

The following summary refers to Figure 3.35 (a-d).

  • Secchi disk depth decreased slightly in the beginning of the season and then increased to 3 m by late June. From July to the middle of August secchi disk depth decreased from 2.7 m to 1.5 m. The rest of the season, secchi disk depth increased from 2 m to 2.4 m (standard > 1.2 m).
  • Chlorophyll-a concentrations decreased from 32 µg/L to 1 µg/L from late April to early June. By early August, chlorophyll-a reached a maximum concentration for the season at 51 µg/L. For the remainder of the season, concentrations were less than 25 µg/L (standard < 15 µg/L).
  • Surface TP concentrations decreased from 52 µg/L to 32 µg/L by early June, then increased to 71 µg/L by early August. The rest of the season concentrations fluctuated between 34 µg/L and 47 µg/L (standard < 40 µg/L). Surface SRP concentrations were below detection limit (< 0.005 µg/L) except through late April to early June and late July to the late August.
  • Bottom TP concentrations decreased while SRP concentrations increased in the beginning of the season. The remainder of the season TP and SRP concentrations followed a similar pattern.  Late May SRP concentration was greater than TP which may be due to silica interference within the SRP sample. Further research is needed to confirm interference (email correspondence; RMB, 2008).
