There is currently no public access on Mooney Lake. A city park trail at 2350 Brockton Lane leads to the northeast corner of the lake.
Mooney Lake is a class 2B lake protected for aquatic life and recreation. MCWD staff has been monitoring the lake once a month from May through September since 2006.

Monitoring season duration was from May through September. Surface samples were collected once a month throughout the season and the parameters analyzed include: total phosphorus (TP) and chlorophyll-a. Measurements of Secchi disc depth were also recorded.

The following summary refers to Figure 11.7 (a-c).
- Secchi disk depth was 3.1 m in May and decreased for the remainder of the season. From July to September, secchi disk depth was below the standard limit (> 1.2 m).
- Chlorophyll-a concentrations gradually increased from May to August, with July and August concentrations surpassing the standard (< 15 µg/L). In September, concentrations decreased to 28 µg/L.
- Surface TP concentrations were below the standard (< 40 µg/L) for May and June. The remainder of the season, concentrations were above the standard limit and peaked at 87 µg/L in August.
