Site Information

Jennings Bay is on Lake Minnetonka which is a class 2B lake protected for aquatic life and recreation. Water quality information is available beginning in 1996. MCWD staff have been monitoring the site on Jennings Bay on a bi-weekly basis from the time of ice out (April) to the time of fall mixing (mid-October) since 2006.

2008 Water Quality Monitoring

Monitoring season started in late April and ended in late October.  A YSI multi-probe sonde was used to measure dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature (oC), pH, and specific conductivity (µS/cm) at each meter depth from the water surface to the bottom.  Water samples were collected at one meter below the water surface and one meter from the bottom. Surface and bottom sample parameters analyzed included total phosphorus (TP), total dissolved phosphorus (TDP), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), total nitrogen (TN), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), nitrate/nitrite (NO3/NO2) and ammonia (NH4).  Surface concentrations of chlorophyll-a were also analyzed and measurements of Secchi disc depth were recorded.

2008 Data Summary

2008 Summer Water Quality Summary
Parameters Range Mean TSI Value Lake Grade
Months   June - Sept.   May - Sept.
Secchi Depth (m) 0.4 - 2.0 0.9 62 D
Surface TP (µg/L) 63 - 154 107.1 72 D
Chlorophyll-a (µg/L) 19 - 141 72.1 73 D
    Overall Score 69 D

The following summary refers to Figure 3.21 (a-d).

  • Secchi disk depth increased from 0.8 m to 2.7 m by late May. The rest of the season there was an overall decline in secchi disk depth ranging from 0.4 m to 2 m (standard > 1.2 m).
  • Chlorophyll-a concentrations decreased from 70 µg/L to 19 µg/L from late April to late June. Concentrations increased to 141 µg/L by early September then declined to 99 µg/L by late September. In October, chlorophyll-a concentrations increased slightly (standard < 15 µg/L).
  • Surface TP concentrations decreased from 117 µg/L to 64 µg/L in the beginning of the season. An overall increase occurred from late May to October with TP concentrations reaching a maximum (173 µg/L) in October (standard < 40 µg/L). Surface SRP con-centrations were below detection limit (< 0.005 µg/L) except from late April to early June and from late September to October.
  • Bottom TP concentrations declined in the beginning of the season then increased to 616 µg/L by late July. Concentrations ranged between 150 and 161 µg/L from September to October.  Bottom SRP concentrations increased to 334 µg/L by early July. From late July to late August, SRP concentrations declined to less than 0.005, and then increased to 24 µg/L by October.
