Directions

Carman Bay is located in Deephaven.  Head west on Minnetonka Blvd toward Maplewood Rd, and turn left to stay on Minnetonka Blvd. Next turn right to stay on Minnetonka Blvd. Public boat launch is on the right.

Site Information

Lake Minnetonka is a class 2B lake protected for aquatic life and recreation. Carsons Bay is located on the southeastern side of Lower Lake North connected to the adjacent St. Louis Bay. MCWD staff have been monitoring the site on Carsons Bay on a bi-weekly basis from the time of ice out (April) to the time of fall mixing (mid-October) since 2006.

Historical Information

See Previous Reports.

2009 Water Quality Monitoring

Monitoring season started in late April and ended in late October.  A YSI multi-probe sonde was used to measure dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature (oC), pH, and specific conductivity (µS/cm) at each meter depth from the water surface to the bottom.  Additionally, water samples were collected within the first two meters of the surface with a 2-meter composite sampling tube. Samples one meter above the bottom were collected with a Van Doran water sampler. Surface sample were analyzed for total phosphorus (TP), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), total nitrogen (TN), where the bottom samples were analyzed for TP and SRP. Surface concentrations of chlorophyll-a were also analyzed and measurements of Secchi disc depth were recorded.

2009 Data Summary

2009 Summer Water Quality Summary
Parameters Range Mean TSI Value Lake Grade
Months   June - Sept.   May - Sept.
Secchi Depth (m) 2.7 - 4.0 3.4 42 A
Surface TP (µg/L) 17 - 26 19.3 47 A
Chlorophyll-a (µg/L) 2 - 7 3.2 42 A
    Overall Score 44 A

The following summary refers to Figure 3.7 (a-d).

  • Secchi disk depth remained above the standard (> 1.4 m) throughout the entire season as
    water transparency fluctuated between 2.7 m to 4.1 m.
  • In the beginning of the season, chlorophyll-a concentrations increased from 4 μg/L to 7
μg/L, then remained below 4 μg/L from early June to middle of August. Chlorophyll-a
concentrations had an general increase throughout the rest of the season with the highest
    concentration occurring in early October (9 μg/L) (standard < 14 μg/L).
  • Surface TP concentrations fluctuated between 16 μg/L and 18 μg/L throughout the
season. Concentrations increased above 20 μg/L in early June, late July, late August, and
late September (standard < 40 μg/L). Surface SRP were below detection limit (< 0.005
    μg/L) except in early October (5 μg/L).
  • Bottom TP concentrations decreased from 37 μg/L to 24 μg/L by early May. The
remainder of the season TP concentrations ranged between 15 μg/L and 28 μg/L. Bottom
SRP concentrations were below detection limit (< 0.005 μg/L) except in late July (5
    μg/L).
