Carman Bay is located in Deephaven.  Head west on Minnetonka Blvd toward Maplewood Rd, and turn left to stay on Minnetonka Blvd. Next turn right to stay on Minnetonka Blvd. Public boat launch is on the right.

Site Information

Lake Minnetonka is a class 2B lake protected for aquatic life and recreation. Carsons Bay is located on the southeastern side of Lower Lake North connected to the adjacent St. Louis Bay. MCWD staff have been monitoring the site on Carsons Bay on a bi-weekly basis from the time of ice out (April) to the time of fall mixing (mid-October) since 2006.

Historical Information

Currently not available.

2008 Water Quality Monitoring

Monitoring season started in late April and ended in late October.  A YSI multi-probe sonde was used to measure dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature (oC), pH, and specific conductivity (µS/cm) at each meter depth from the water surface to the bottom.  Water samples were collected at one meter below the water surface and one meter from the bottom. Surface and bottom sample parameters analyzed included total phosphorus (TP), total dissolved phosphorus (TDP), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), total nitrogen (TN), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), nitrate/nitrite (NO3/NO2) and ammonia (NH4).  Surface concentrations of chlorophyll-a were also analyzed and measurements of Secchi disc depth were recorded.

2008 Data Summary

2008 Summer Water Quality Summary
Parameters Range Mean TSI Value Lake Grade
Months   June - Sept.   May - Sept.
Secchi Depth (m) 2.4 - 4.2 3.2 43 A
Surface TP (µg/L) 14 - 24 19.2 47 A
Chlorophyll-a (µg/L) 2 - 10 4.9 46 A
    Overall Score 45 A

The following summary refers to Figure 3.7 (a-d).

  • Secchi disk depth remained above the standard (> 1.2 m) throughout the entire season. From late April to the early August, there was an overall increase in secchi disk depth ranging between 2.1 m and 4.2 m.  Secchi disk depth decreased throughout August from 4.2 m to 3.4 m and increased from 2.7 m to 3.3 m for the remainder of the season.
  • In the beginning of the season, chlorophyll-a concentrations increased from 9 µg/L to 13 µg/L, then by early June concentrations were the lowest of the season (2 µg/L). The remainder of the season, chlorophyll-a concentrations increased from 2 µg/L to 10 µg/L with a slight decline in October (standard < 15 µg/L).
  • Surface TP concentrations increased from 26 µg/L to 31 µg/L in the beginning of the season. From June to late August, TP concentrations slightly decreased ranging from 14 µg/L to 23 µg/L. Concentrations slightly increased in the late season ranging from 20 µg/L to 24 µg/L (standard < 40 µg/L). Surface SRP were below detection limit (< 0.005 µg/L) except in early August (5 µg/L).
  • Bottom TP concentrations ranged between 17 µg/L and 25 µg/L throughout the entire season. Bottom SRP concentrations were below detection limit (< 0.005 µg/L) except in late May (5 µg/L).
