Halsted Bay Wetland Restoration Project
The 2007 MCWD Comprehensive Plan identifies an annual phosphorus concentration goal of 50 mg/L for Halsted Bay. It is anticipated that Halsted Bay will be placed on the State Impaired Waters List in the future because of its poor water quality. In order to meet loading goals, MCWD will need to reduce significant loads to the bay entering from Six Mile Creek, but also from the immediate watershed (i.e. HB1-HB6). Opportunities identified in the MCWD Comprehensive Water Resources Management Plan to reduce external loads to Halsted Bay include the construction of a restored wetland within a strategic geographic area sufficient to achieve nutrient reductions. The HHPLS identifies a 118 lbs/year reduction required from the immediate drainage area to achieve the in-lake concentration goals. MCWD also has a broader interest in enhancing the corridor connection and quality of resources within the creek corridor flowing upstream from Lake Minnetonka along Six Mile Creek. The MCWD Comprehensive Water Resources Management Plan identifies a large wetland area with moderate to high restoration potential along the north side of the outlet of Six Mile Creek. A restoration project would enhance the resources on the project site and serve as a water quality improvement, providing bioretention and treatment to stormwater runoff from basins upstream and surrounding watersheds prior to discharge downstream to Halsted Bay.
