Prairie Seed Collection

Six Mile Marsh Prairie, Minnetrista
Saturday September 23, 2017 10:00 am -12:00 pm

Help us collect prairie seeds at Six Mile Marsh Prairie so they can be used for planting at the site, and you'll receive a small sample of prairie seed to take home with you! At this free event, you'll be instructed in how to harvest prairie seed, and we'll provide you with ID cards to help you identify the different prairie plants.

The Six Mile Marsh Prairie Restoration project was a key project in the Six Mile-Halsted Bay Subwatershed to improve the quality of water flowing into Lake Minnetonka's Halsted Bay. In 2011 and 2012, MCWD acquired the 112-acre Halverson and 97-acre Dimler farms in Minnetrista from willing sellers to protect and restore existing wetlands, buffer areas, and wildlife habitat. The land features steep slopes that lead directly to the marsh, so MCWD converted the land back to native prairie and oak savanna to stop erosion and to reduce runoff.

This event has limited capacity, so sign up early to save your spot! Because of limited parking at the site, carpooling is encouraged. We will provide participants with garden gloves to use during the event, but you are welcome to bring your own from home.

”Prairie Seed Collection" is part of “Jump In & Make a Splash!” - a series of community events across the watershed celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District. The series concludes with the Sunset Celebration on Thursday, November 2 at St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church in Minneapolis, featuring live music, food and drink. Tickets are $40. People who attend at least five events qualify for half-price admission and those who attend all nine events get in for free!

The event is sponsored by MCWD, in partnership with the Freshwater Society, 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, Berne Scale, REI, Target, Wilderness Inquiry, Three Rivers Park District and Tonka Bay Marina.
