Citizen Involvement

The MCWD Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) plays an important role as a citizen-led advisory group to the District. Under §103D.331, MCWD is required annually to appoint an advisory committee to advise and assist the Managers on all matters affecting the interests of the Watershed District and make recommendations to the Managers on all contemplated projects and improvements. In recent years the CAC has been heavily involved in the revisions to MCWD Rules and regulations and it is anticipated that the group will continue to serve a critical role in the coming months as Rules recommendations are finalized and submitted to the MCWD Board for consideration. The current appointments will serve until the end of 2010 at which time MCWD Staff solicited nominations from Cities and the general public to serve for the 2011 calendar year. How do I become a CAC Member?

Each year the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD) seeks individuals to serve on its Citizen Advisory Committee.

If you'd like to help protect and preserve Minnehaha Creek, Lake Minnetonka, the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes, and other valued resources, become a Citizen Advisor for the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District.

Application Form

Applications are accepted in November and December for the following year. The MCWD Board of Managers reviews applications and appoints individuals to the CAC annually each January.

Each year local government entities in the MCWD are invited to appoint one individual (resident of MCWD) and one alternate to serve on this committee. Any resident of MCWD can apply for a spot on the Citizen Advisory Committee with or without endorsement from their local government.

Please contact MCWD's District Planner for more information.

What are some of the activities CAC Members volunteer for?

As a CAC member, you can participate as much as you like by volunteering on activities like these:

  • Increase Public Awareness: You could represent the watershed as community events and participate in educational seminars.
  • Participate in Development of Watershed Management Policies: You could prepare recommendations for the Board of Managers on long term goals aimed at protecting and enhancing the watershed.
  • Advise On Water Quality: You could be our eyes in the community, noticing and reporting threats to water quality. Or, help us educate the community to protect water quality.
  • Improve Habitat: You could create ways to locate and prevent the spread of invasive, exotic species or promote the planting of native species.
  • Help Improve Stormwater Quality: You can teach neighborhood groups the importance of proper lawn care practices and how this can improve water quality.
  • Advise On Projects: You can review District plans for flood protection and water quality protection. We want your suggestions.

How often does the CAC meet?

Meetings of the committee are held once each month in the evenings throughout the coming year. Currently, the Citizens Advisory Committee is currently involved in the District's Rulemaking Process and meets on the fourth Thursday of every month.  For a complete schedule of the Rulemaking Task Force, general information and meeting materials, please click here: Rule Making Task Force.
